A £6m refurbishment project (2007-2011) funded by the HLF improved circulation and accessibility, and provided additional toilet accommodation, a new entrance and cafeteria extension. The Great Hall was extensively renovated and low energy air conditioning discretely integrated into the panelling. The former dreary institutional atmosphere has been transformed into a welcoming vibrant space for arts, culture, business and leisure.

A significant challenge for the project was to install mechanical ventilation ductwork behind panelling in the Great Hall and to introduce air supply without visible grilles. The solution was to create vertical shafts within the wall thickness and to supply the air behind existing cast iron radiators.

A new extension created a new more visible entrance, improved access and upgraded foyer and bar facilities. The electrical services were completely replaced and new efficient ventilation systems provided. A sustainable solution to providing air conditioning was through the installation of an absorption chiller which uses eco-friendly Sheffield District Heating as its heat source. The project was supported by the Arts Council.

P3R Engineers designed a natural cooling and heating system, with an underground labyrinth and roof-mounted ventilation, to save energy for the award-winning new Bury Theatre at Hurstpierpoint College. The college needed to construct a new Performing Arts Centre for its 700 day and boarding school pupils, which was sustainable and energy efficient.

To provide natural heating and cooling during performances, P3R Engineers designed a system to efficiently exchange heat between the building, the surrounding air and the ground. A labyrinth of fresh air pathways was designed, to extract heat from the building during the summer into the large thermal mass of the ground beneath. Air remains in the labyrinth overnight and is then released to cool the building during the day, or to provide heat in winter. Specially designed ‘hats’ at the top of the auditorium mix fresh air with circulating air, negating the need for expensive air handling equipment.

P3R Engineers have created the optimal passive ventilation, heating and cooling system for this heavily occupied theatre, allowing temperature, ventilation and CO2 levels to be carefully controlled by the Building Management System.

The new Bury Theatre was named as winner of a Sussex Heritage Trust Award in the Public & Community Category 2019.

Designed for the pupils of this renowned school for gifted young musicians to experience performing to larger audiences in future but in an intimate familiar environment. The building is mechanically ventilated using the rake of the stalls as a fresh air plenum, whose thermal mass moderates temperatures in warmer weather.

P3R Engineers developed cost-effective designs for all heating, ventilation and lighting for the RIBA National Award winning Victorian Engine House and pumping station at Walthamstow Wetlands, which needed to undergo major renovation works in order to open to the public for the first time in 150 years.

P3R Engineers worked alongside the architects to redesign the entire site, including the redevelopment of the locally-listed Victorian Engine House and pumping station. Despite the abundant water supply posing many challenges when designing underground and exposed services, P3R Engineers managed surveys and created a sensitive design to house all gas pipes, water and electricity services against the original brick walls. An LPG boiler system was installed to provide efficient heating, and opening roof lights give natural ventilation throughout the building.

Walthamstow Wetlands was recognised with a RIBA London Award and a RIBA National Award in 2018 for its intelligent integration of architecture and landscape.

This fully operational, 211 hectare Thames Water reservoir site is the main source of water supply for 3.5 million people. It is also an internationally important nature reserve, providing home to a wide range of wildlife from rare waterfowl to birds of prey.

Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the ‘Opening Doors’ project will restore the original kitchens to create a fully working eighteenth century kitchen, and improve displays and access to the civic collection of gold and silverware. A new environmental control system will minimise long-term damage to the contents and fabric of the building and reduce its carbon footprint. Air source heat pumps will replace the existing electric storage heaters, and all lighting will be replaced with LED sources.
